"Between the devil and the deep blue sea" is an idiom referring to being trapped between two dangerous or undesirable options, with no easy way out. In seafaring contexts, the “devil” referred to one of the longest seams on a wooden ship’s hull, running along the edge where the deck meets the side (sometimes called the "devil seam"). Sailors needed to caulk this seam to make the ship watertight, which was dangerous work. To perform the task, a sailor might be suspended precariously overboard in a position that left him stuck between "the devil" (the seam) and the sea—a dangerous situation either way.
