The first recorded use of a paper charts for maritime navigation dates back to the late 13th century. The earliest known charts of this kind are the portolan charts, which began to appear in Mediterranean Europe during this period. Portolan charts were highly detailed maps used primarily for marine navigation, and they depicted coastlines, harbors, and navigational hazards.
The oldest surviving portolan chart is the Carta Pisana, which dates to around 1270-1300. These early charts were meticulously drawn on parchment or vellum and were later transferred to paper as the material became more widely available in Europe. Portolan charts were an essential tool for navigators during the Age of Discovery, facilitating the expansion of maritime exploration.
